Cuileann is the Irish word for “Holly”, inspired by the name of the colourway used in this shawl. It was a spontaneous project, when my brain didn’t want to work on any of the other items I had on my needles. With an easy-to-memorize 8-row repeat, this shawl was a companion of many evening’s TV knitting.
Now that it’s completed, I love draping it around my shoulders, most often held together with a shawl pin.

Difficulty
This pattern is well within the skills of an intermediate knitter, or a beginner who is willing to expand their skills.

Sizes
One size, 173.5cm/68.5” x 32cm/13”, however this shawlette can easily be adapted to exactly the desired size

Yarn
One skein of Fingering weight yarn.
The pattern is very adaptable to exactly the yardage you have, so you can use up every last bit of that special skein.
I used the below base because I was looking for the drape that the merino silk blend has.
75% SW Merino and 25% silk
400 meters (437 yards)/ 100 gram
Sample worked in shade “Holly before Christmas” hand-dyed by Eve Chambers Textiles, and I would recommend a yarn that has gentle colour variations to make the lace pattern stand out.

Needles
4.5 mm/ US size 7 circular needles, or size required to achieve the type of fabric you love.

Notions
Darning Needle

Gauge
22 sts x 14 rows = 4” / 10cm in main pattern after blocking.
Gauge is not critical to this shawl, but I still recommend taking the time, to make sure that you achieve exactly the texture you love.
